In the afterlife, there is a law that requires all deceased to undergo seven trials within 49 days of their death—held in the realms of murder, laziness, deception, injustice, betrayal, violence, and familial ties. Only those who pass all seven trials and are declared innocent will have the opportunity for rebirth. Fortunate firefighter Kim Ja-hong sacrifices himself to save a girl during a fire. The hell messengers, Gang-rim and Deok-chun, appear before him. Even though Kim Ja-hong cannot believe he is dead, Deok-chun solemnly informs him that he is both a deceased and a noble. At the entrance to hell, Kim Ja-hong encounters another messenger, Jang-lim, who is waiting for him. He oversees Gang-rim and Deok-chun and will defend Ja-hong during his forthcoming seven trials. It turns out that if King Yama allows 49 souls to be reborn within 1000 years, the three messengers can also be reincarnated on earth. They believe that the 48th soul—this noble Kim Ja-hong, who has appeared for 19 years—can successfully be reborn. However, in various hells, Kim Ja-hong's past resurfaces repeatedly, revealing that this noble also harbors "unspeakable secrets."
