Young William (played by Patrick Fugit) seizes the opportunity to write an article for Rolling Stone magazine before graduation. He will follow a rock band on their journey, embarking on a long trip to report on them. His mother is worried about the band's bad influences and strongly opposes William's decision. William stubbornly sets off anyway. His interview subjects are the members of the band "Stillwater," a group of young people who have not yet made a name for themselves and are traveling across the country for concerts with dreams in their hearts. They possess many characteristics common to other rock musicians: indulgence, shouting, mood swings, and inciting the audience's screams during performances. At the same time, they are prone to drug use and exhibit the selfish and jealous weaknesses inherent in human nature. A fan named Penny (played by Kate Hudson) joins the band, only to ultimately choose to leave. William immerses himself in and participates in all of this, gaining valuable experiences along the way.
