Kowalski (Barry Newman) was once a race car driver, a police officer, and a stuntman, and now he works for an auto service company. One night, he prepares to transport a Dodge "White Challenger" from Colorado to San Francisco. On the night of his departure, he makes a bet with an old friend, agreeing to call from San Francisco at 3 PM the next afternoon. This means he must reach his destination within 15 hours, maintaining a speed of around 160. Kowalski speeds along, quickly attracting the attention of highway patrol officers.
