Journalist Harry Barber (played by Woody Harrelson) living in the seaside town of Pameto is sentenced to prison for being involved in a fraud case. Two years later, he is released from prison and returns to his girlfriend Nina (played by Gina Gershon). The events from that year have had a huge impact on his life; no one in Pameto is willing to hire him, and Nina, as an artist, is not very wealthy, leaving Harry struggling for a livelihood. One day, he encounters the beautiful and alluring socialite Ray Malu (played by Elisabeth Shue) at a tavern. Ray's husband Felix (played by Rolf Hoppe) is suffering from lung cancer, and the family has moved here to recuperate. Unhappy with her husband's stinginess, Ray conspires with her stepdaughter Odette (played by Chloë Sevigny) to create a kidnapping scheme to swindle Felix's money. For Harry, this seems like a lucrative deal, but things are not that simple…
