Journalist Harry Barber (played by Woody Harrelson) living in the seaside town of Pameto is sentenced to prison for being involved in a fraud case. Two years later, he is released from prison and returns to his girlfriend Nina (played by Gina Gershon). The events from that year have had a huge impact on his life; no one in Pameto is willing to hire him, and Nina, as an artist, is not very wealthy, leaving Harry struggling for a livelihood. One day, he encounters the beautiful and alluring socialite Ray Malu (played by Elisabeth Shue) at a tavern. Ray's husband Felix (played by Rolf Hoppe) is suffering from lung cancer, and the family has moved here to recuperate.
