In 1945, in Karafuto, Tetsu (Sayuri Yoshinaga) tenderly cultivated the cherry trees that her husband, Tokijiro (Hiroshi Abe), brought back as seeds from Japan. In August, the Soviet Union invaded south Karafuto, and Tetsu fled with her sons to Abashiri in Hokkaido, enduring a harsh life of poverty in the cold winter. Tetsu continued to protect and raise her children. As time passed, in 1971, her grown-up younger son, Shujiro (Masato Sakai), returned to Japan from America with a successful career alongside his wife, Mari (Ryoko Shinohara). However, upon their reunion, Shujiro felt quite uneasy about his aging mother, who appeared somewhat different. At this moment, the forbidden memories hidden within the mother and son were about to be unveiled.
