Karen (Audrey Hepburn) and Martha (Shirley MacLaine) run a private school together. Despite being women, their unique, wise, and decisive style has won them the affection of many students and teachers, and their friendship is very strong. Mary (Karen Balkin), who grew up in a pampered environment, gradually develops a twisted personality. After making a mistake, Mary faces punishment from Karen and Martha, which she sees as a deep humiliation, planting the seeds of hatred in her young heart. Mary tells her grandmother that she inadvertently witnessed Karen and Martha kissing, and the furious grandmother publicizes this baseless slander. Faced with the mounting accusations, Karen and Martha initially resist, but soon realize that their only leverage—sincerity and openness—is remarkably insignificant.
