Karen (Audrey Hepburn) and Martha (Shirley MacLaine) run a private school together. Despite being women, their unique, wise, and decisive style has won them the affection of many students and teachers, and their friendship is very strong. Mary (Karen Balkin), who grew up in a pampered environment, gradually develops a twisted personality. After making a mistake, Mary faces punishment from Karen and Martha, which she sees as a deep humiliation, planting the seeds of hatred in her young heart.
