In 1942, the War of Resistance against Japan and World War II were in a state of fierce intensity. Fires raged, lives were devastated, and natural disasters and human calamities filled the land with wails. While military strategists and politicians focused on the plundering of cities, few noticed that the ancient central plains of Henan were experiencing a horrendous drought. The film's protagonist, the old landlord (played by Zhang Guoli), is cunning and mercenary, a typical feudal landlord. Yet, even he cannot stand against this unprecedented disaster; he is forced to flee and witnesses the various deaths of his relatives, including his son, daughter-in-law, and old partner. His experience is a microcosm of the three million disaster victims. Faced with their suffering, whether it is the high-ranking Chiang Kai-shek (played by Chen Daoming) or the American journalist, John Hershey (played by Adrien Brody), who reports on the tragedy, or anyone from home and abroad, how can they turn a blind eye to the hellish scenes unfolding before them? The endless struggle for survival reflects a fragment of the tragic fate of the Chinese nation... This film is adapted from Liu Zhenyun's novel "Remembering 1942."
