The story takes place at the end of the Qing Dynasty, where the Western powers use their foreign guns and cannons to break open the long-closed door of the Eastern sleeping lion. Empress Dowager Cixi wields immense power, indifferent to the fate of the nation. The land of China is suffering greatly, and the people live in misery. The seeds of revolution are brewing vigorously, about to become a raging fire capable of toppling the dynasty. Wang Wu (played by Yang Fan), a captain of the Black Flag Army led by Liu Yongfu, possesses exceptional martial arts skills. However, during an assassination attempt on a Japanese general, he faces a painful defeat, with his subordinates falling one after another. Feeling guilty towards his men, he attempts suicide by jumping off a cliff but survives by chance and retreats to the rural Northeast. By fate, Wang Wu meets Tan Sitong (played by Di Long) and Yuan Shikai (played by Zhao Changjun). The three develop a close bond and embark on adventures in the capital together. Wang Wu establishes the Strong Martial Arts Society and encounters the beautiful Yan Xi (played by Rosamund Kwan), who happens to be the favored concubine of Prince Yi (played by Huang Jinjian). The national situation is turbulent, and Wang Wu, Tan Sitong, and Yuan Shikai each embark on different paths in life...
