In 1938, inmate Henry (played by Kevin Bacon) attempts to escape from the infamous Alcatraz prison but ultimately fails. Warden Glenn despises Henry, who threatens his position, and has him thrown into a solitary dungeon for three years, during which he suffers countless beatings. Henry finally leaves the dungeon, but the first thing he does is kill the inmate who betrayed him with a spoon, leading to a charge of first-degree murder. Newly graduated lawyer James (played by Christian Slater) is assigned to defend Henry. Years of torment have nearly stripped Henry of his ability to communicate, but James seizes every opportunity to gradually bridge the gap between them. In the initial hearing, James shifts the focus to the inhumane prison conditions, attracting media attention and inciting obstacles from all sides. His girlfriend and biological brother abandon him under pressure. The only support James has left is his dedication to justice, but at the last moment, Henry expresses that he would rather be sentenced to death...
