A shocking and horrific murder occurred in Chicago. Bishop Rosen of a local church was brutally killed, with mysterious numbers carved on his body. The police arrested the bloody suspect Allen (played by Edward Norton), who was present at the scene. Martin (played by Richard Gere), as Allen's defense lawyer, clashes with his ex-girlfriend, prosecutor Janet. Martin does not care about the truth; his only goal in defending Allen is to win the case and make a name for himself. As the representative of justice, Janet is, of course, not backing down. Janet (played by Laura Linney) investigates and discovers that Bishop Rosen had previously sexually assaulted Allen and others. Allen's defense claiming he suffers from "time amnesia" seems absurd, and the witness he mentioned in the murder case has never been found. Janet believes that all evidence, including motive, is sufficient for murder. Martin successfully acquits Allen on the grounds of his mental illness; however, everything turns out unexpectedly.
