In 1946, the anxious ballet dancer Rut accompanied her husband Bertil back to Sweden after concluding their academic trip around Italy. They had a quarrel in their hotel room in Basel (a city in northwestern Switzerland on the Rhine) and on the train, throwing food out to the hungry German refugees outside. By chance, they overheard a few witty remarks about marriage from some Swedish pastors, and ultimately they reconciled...In terms of the film's theme, it continues the exploration of gender conflict and questioning of marital relationships found in Bergman's early works. Rut's failed relationship with Raoul, which leads to infertility, is a knot in the web of relationships, while her later union with her husband Bertil gives rise to the tragedy of Bertil's former lover Viola; all these intertwine like a whirlpool consuming the passion in life. At the time, Bergman was going through a divorce from his second wife Ellen, making this film a reflection of Bergman's own views on marriage.Another important point is that "Three" represents a new attempt in Bergman's early films; this movie is not driven by a plot but utilizes the characters' psychological states as the internal rhythm's clutch, with the enclosed train compartment providing a grand stage for the characters' emotional exposition. This laid the groundwork for his later, deeper explorations.
