The story takes place in Shanghai in 1910, where American rich kid Gao Daosheng (played by Adrian Pasdar) meets a street child named Fang Lin (played by Zunlong), and they establish a very strong friendship. By chance, they accidentally discover a drug lord's cellar hiding drugs, which leads to great danger. In the ensuing gunfight, Daosheng's father tragically dies, while Fang Lin is arrested by the police after killing the drug lord to avenge Gao Daosheng. Twenty-five years later, Gao Daosheng returns to Shanghai to search for news of Fang Lin, who has now become a prominent figure on the Bund. Time has changed their characters, ultimately leading to their estrangement. With the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, Fang Lin leaves Shanghai with his wife, yet his greatest reluctance is still for Gao Daosheng.
