Johnny Cash (played by Joaquin Phoenix) was a country boy from Arkansas. An accident in his childhood resulted in the death of his brother, and from then on, he lived under the condemnation and ridicule of his father (played by Robert Patrick), struggling to turn his life around. A music lover, he gradually rose to fame as a country singer and started his own family. However, during a tour, he accidentally encountered drugs, which slowly led him into addiction. His drug use caused his wife, Vivian (played by Ginnifer Goodwin), to leave him with their children. He then sought help from the woman he had long admired, but who was already married, singer June Carter (played by Reese Witherspoon). She provided him with support to overcome his addiction but repeatedly rejected his romantic advances. With successful recovery, Cash was able to reboot his career, and his love for Carter eventually flourished on their shared stage.
