Giman (played by Gérard Depardieu), a more than 50-year-old overweight, vulgar yet kind man, lives in a trailer next to his mother's garden. He spends his days tending to his vegetable garden, hanging out in small bars with friends, and occasionally enjoying romantic moments with his young girlfriend Annette (played by Sophie Guillemin), leading a quiet life. However, he harbors an unknown vulnerability and pain; his mother conceived him unwanted, and he has never known his father; teachers mocked him for his stupidity; and friends, while fond of him, often make fun of him. His girlfriend wants a child, but due to his insecurities, he has always refused, leading to tensions in their relationship. One day, Giman meets Marguerite (played by Gisèle Casadesus) in the park, who is raising pigeons and reading chapters of novels aloud. Something begins to bloom in his barren mind. The knowledgeable Marguerite is a retired agronomist who has spent much of her life traveling the world and reading literature. From then on, Giman dedicates his afternoons to Marguerite's readings...
