"Tokyo Drifter," filmed in 1966, led to Seijun Suzuki being fired by Nikkatsu the following year on the grounds of being "incomprehensible." In fact, "Tokyo Drifter" is much more conventional than Suzuki's previous works, likely a result of the pressure from the film industry. However, the unique characteristics that Suzuki adhered to did not change; he still created a bizarre world of shadows and suspense in the yakuza genre. The ebb and flow of the simple plot showcases the director's skill. The film's entertainment elements are maximized: handsome men and beautiful women, intense gunfights, seasonal scenery, popular songs... Suzuki does not display the aloofness typical of art film directors; on the contrary, his principle of prioritizing entertainment has never been abandoned, only told in his own way.
