Leonard (played by Joaquin Phoenix) has been unable to free himself from the anguish of being abandoned by his fiancée for pathological reasons. Living in his parents' apartment in New York, he has attempted suicide multiple times. Leonard's parents are considering a partnership with their friends, the Cohen family, to run a dry cleaning business. The eldest daughter of the Cohen family, Sandra (played by Vinessa Shaw), falls in love with Leonard, but he is drawn to his blonde neighbor, Michelle (played by Gwyneth Paltrow). Unfortunately, Michelle is involved in an affair with a married lawyer, Ronald (played by Elias Koteas). Leonard suffers painfully in the turmoil of love, as dawn and night alternate, leaving him at a loss.
