Daisy (played by Jessica Tandy) grew up in a poor neighborhood, and it was her husband's business success that allowed their family to live a life of comfort, making Daisy very frugal. Now, at an advanced age and unable to drive herself, her son hires a Black driver named Hoke (played by Morgan Freeman), whom Daisy strongly dislikes. Initially, she avoids going out because she doesn't want Hoke to drive her, but later realizes that it's unfair for her son to pay for Hoke's services without him actually working. Eventually, she gives Hoke the opportunity to drive her for the first time. Hoke is a very kind and simple man who knows he is not initially accepted, but he doesn’t take it to heart. Instead, he shows concern for Daisy's life and slowly understands her stubborn adherence to her principles. Daisy's initial rejection of Hoke begins to melt away, and over the years, she discovers that Hoke is a trustworthy friend. Thus, Daisy teaches the illiterate Hoke how to read, and Hoke becomes Daisy's closest companion in her later years.
