Following the report of a moonbow in a magazine, Japanese boy Reio (played by Masaki Okada) and his girlfriend travel to Hawaii and stumble upon an old cinema in the village of Honokaa at the northern tip of the island. Six months later, after dropping out of university, Reio returns to the town alone to work as a projection assistant in the cinema. He gradually integrates into the simple and peaceful life of the locals and becomes friends with the mischievous yet culinary-skilled Grandma (played by Chieko Baisho). Grandma invites Reio to her home daily for delicious meals, and the two wait together in the valley for the moonbow. One day, Reio meets the lively and cheerful girl Maleia (played by Jun Hasegawa), who soon becomes the sunshine in his life. Feeling neglected, Grandma is downcast, but Reio remains oblivious. On the night of his birthday, Reio brings Maleia to Grandma's house for dinner, but Maleia is hospitalized due to an allergy to Grandma's cooking. When Reio calls to confront Grandma, he learns that she has suddenly gone blind. At the same time, the cinema where Reio works is facing closure. In the gentle sea breeze of Hawaii, the boy quietly experiences the choices of growing up. The film is adapted from Reio Yoshida's autobiographical essay collection of the same name, based on the author's personal experiences, with many characters in the book actually existing. The theme song "Until the Rainbow Disappears" is sung by Kyoko Koizumi, who is a longtime friend of the author.
