This film is adapted from Ronald Harwood's play of the same name, with Anthony Hopkins portraying an aging and ailing actor, and Ian McKellen playing his loyal backstage assistant and dresser, Norman. The story is set during World War II. It is said that the original character of the play is based on Ronald Harwood himself, who was the dresser for the famous British actor Sir Donald Wolfit.
