This drama tells the story of two county magistrates during the late Qing dynasty who, seeing the chaotic situation, return to Beijing from Shanxi. Various characters in their families participate in social life in different roles. There is Fan Ye and Shi Ye, who hold on to outdated thoughts but steadfastly maintain their national integrity; there is Guanghan, who was adopted into Fan's mansion as a young master, spending his days indulging in brothels and smoking opium, ultimately becoming a victim of feudal family traditions. There is Guangwen, who believes in the Three Principles of the People; Lingzi, a maid in Fan's mansion who cares only about rising above her station regardless of the consequences; Erxin, a daughter-in-law of Fan's family who commits suicide due to a forced marriage; and Madame Yueniang, who sacrifices her life to strive for women's freedom and independence. There are also Nianren and Guangwu, who dedicate themselves to the revolutionary cause. The central character, Guo Caisan, embodies strong traditional concepts and narrates the rise and fall of Fan's mansion through his perspective. Starting as a minor errand boy in Fan's mansion, he becomes the chief steward through his abilities. During the Japanese occupation of Beijing, he is forced to become the head of the tax bureau but, under the guidance of the underground party "Boss Cai," does many beneficial things for the Communist Party's Eighth Route Army, demonstrating the national integrity that a Chinese person should possess. However, during the rule of the Kuomintang, he is labeled as the top traitor of Beijing. After Beijing's liberation, the Communist Party clears his name. His romantic entanglements with the young Madame Fan, Yueniang, the maid Lingzi, Nianren, the eldest daughter of the Fan family, and Nianchun, the second daughter, fill the drama with conflict and tension, leading to ups and downs in the story, filled with suspense... In the end, everyone pursues their ideals in different directions. This drama connects two families and half a century of modern history through the unique character of Guo Caisan. He represents Chinese feudal society, demonstrating loyalty, filial piety, and righteousness towards the Fan family, while also showcasing his personality traits shaped by living in two feudal families. It further illustrates a theme that such a feudal cultural environment can only forge a character like Guo Caisan. On the other hand, Nianren, who boldly embraces progressive thoughts and excels in ideals, morals, and scientific knowledge, is bound to be the ultimate beneficiary and victor.
