In the spring of 1922, writer Nick (Tobey Maguire) leaves his hometown full of hope and travels to New York, a booming city amidst the gold rush. Although jazz is popular and stocks are soaring, there is a stark divide between the rich and the poor, and people are indulged in the excesses of wealth. In pursuit of the American Dream, Nick gives up writing to enter the stock market and moves to a bay near New York, becoming the neighbor of the mysterious millionaire Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio).
