Two brothers often fish with their father. The gentle river and quiet afternoons become the most unforgettable moments between father and sons. The father is an old pastor who frequently preaches in town, and the elder son Norman (played by Craig Sheffer) has inherited his father's vocation—he excels at teaching and returns to his hometown after graduating from college to preach and educate. However, the younger son Paul (played by Brad Pitt) has a completely different personality—he loves freedom and has a unique fishing method. Unfortunately, he has become addicted to gambling, which leads to him owing money and getting beaten up. After getting married, Norman receives a job offer from the University of Chicago. Before he leaves home for Chicago, he shares one last fishing trip by the river with his father and brother. He urges Paul to leave with him, but Paul, obsessed with fishing, refuses to go. Unexpectedly, this turns out to be their final gathering.
