In New York, a young man named Axel (Johnny Depp) dreams of an Inuit who collapses on an ice field, saved by sled dogs, with a red balloon floating in the air... Axel's friend Paul (Vincent Gallo), who is obsessed with acting, visits him and invites him to Arizona to be a best man for his uncle Leo, who has been running a car business in Arizona for many years. This leaves Axel and Paul working at the car dealership. Soon, Axel meets the mismatched mother and daughter, Elena (Faye Dunaway) and Grace. In an effort to help Elena realize her dream of flying, Axel stays at their home, attempting to build various flying machines, starting over after repeated failures, while the neurotic mother-daughter duo's bickering continuously accompanies him. In Axel's dreams, a fish soars through the air... Elena finally gets a small airplane, and at a celebratory party, Axel professes his love for Grace, leading to an unexpected outcome. The film won the Silver Bear at the 1993 Berlin Film Festival.
