Alex (played by Luke Wilson) is a struggling writer who is deeply in debt. After a debt collector teaches him a lesson, he smashes his computer, which he relies on for his livelihood, and warns him that if he can't repay his debts within a month, his life will be in danger. Fortunately, Alex already has what he thinks is a brilliant idea in his mind, but without a computer, he has to hire a stenographer, Emma (played by Kate Hudson), to help him complete his writing. Unexpectedly, Emma turns out to be a strong-willed woman who is always raising objections to Alex's narration, and to Alex's frustration, the ideas she suggests seem to be the correct and interesting ones. Thus, amidst conflicts and arguments, Alex's novel begins to progress relatively smoothly. As the deadline approaches, will he be able to finish it successfully?
