In the 1950s in Northern China, childhood Qiu Yun (played by Wang Feifei) has parents who are traveling actors in a theater troupe, performing the traditional play "Zhong Kui Marries His Sister." Her mother (played by Wang Changjun), who plays the role of a flower female lead, elopes with a man, leaving an indelible shadow on her father (played by Li Baotian), who comes to believe that being a flower female lead symbolizes a woman's impropriety. Despite her father's views, little Qiu Yun is clever and secretly learns to perform. Growing into a young woman, Qiu Yun (played by Gong Lin) is discovered during an emergency performance to be a "natural talent for singing." However, her father, Old Qiu, worries that his daughter will follow her mother's footsteps and insists she leave the troupe. Nevertheless, Qiu Yun boldly declares that she would rather sing male roles than stop performing. Reluctantly, Old Qiu has no choice but to teach her to sing male roles, and she quickly becomes a pillar of the troupe. After growing into a young woman and entering the provincial theater group, Qiu Yun (played by Xu Shouli) secretly admires her mentor, Teacher Zhang (played by Ji Qilin), who has a wife and children in the countryside. To protect Qiu Yun’s future amidst gossip, Teacher Zhang is forced to leave the theater group. After the "Cultural Revolution" ends, Qiu Yun, now a mother of two, is determined to return to the stage and reprise her role in "Zhong Kui Marries His Sister," eventually gaining acclaim both domestically and internationally for her superb skills. Yet, her artistic success cannot cover up her emotional pain...
