Three Chinese women from different regions—mainland woman Zhao Hong (played by Siqin Gaowa), Taiwanese woman Huang Xiongpeng (played by Sylvia Chang), and Hong Kong woman Li Fengjiao (played by Maggie Cheung)—meet and become friends in New York, a foreign land. However, their different backgrounds and beliefs lead to conflicts among them. Zhao Hong, who has just married an American-born Chinese, holds endless hopes and aspirations for immigrant life; Huang Xiongpeng, who has lived in the U.S. for over ten years, is deeply influenced by American ideals and is passionate about stage arts, eager to break into the American theater and gain acceptance; while the independent Hong Kong immigrant Li Fengjiao believes she can survive anywhere and must find her place and value in America. They share their feelings and perspectives in this foreign land but must face their own issues.
