Twenty years after, human society is facing an unprecedented existential threat – all humans have lost their ability to reproduce, and countries in Eastern Europe and Africa are in fragments, with a massive migration of populations to wealthy countries like the UK. However, within the UK, people are engulfed in chaos and panic. Everyone is anxious and frantic about the impending apocalypse. An African girl named Kee (played by Claire-Hope Ashitey) illegally immigrates to the country, but to everyone's surprise, she is pregnant. In a desperate bid to save the last hope for humanity, police officer Theo (Clive Owen) and his ex-wife Julian (Julianne Moore) decide to do whatever it takes to get Kee safely out of the country, but gunfire makes their task incredibly difficult. During their escape, the baby is born in a refugee camp. With danger surrounding them, preserving humanity's last hope becomes Theo's sole belief.
