In early 1949, the Kuomintang government sensed that its regime was about to collapse and devised the AM plan: to execute “political prisoners” in prisons, transfer bank reserves, infiltrate a large number of spies, recruit bandits from the Taihu region, and prepare for a series of operations prior to the retreat from Jiangnan. In response to the reactionary AM plan of the Kuomintang, the command of the People’s Liberation Army’s “Third Field Army” formulated the “Dawn Operation,” sending a southward armed detachment led by the female head of the reconnaissance section, Guan Zhuqing, to cross the river and infiltrate the ancient city of Jiangnan. With the cooperation of guerrilla forces and underground party organizations in Taihu, they engaged in thrilling battles against the enemy with astonishing wisdom and fearless spirit, thwarting one conspiracy after another, rescuing a group of Communist Party members and patriotic democrats from prison, and protecting the bank reserves. After the liberation of the ancient city, they also collaborated with the People’s Liberation Army and Public Security forces to eliminate more than 6,900 remnants of the armed forces, spies, and bandits of Chiang Kai-shek’s Kuomintang in the Taihu region, capturing the notorious and malicious bandit commander Hu Chuan Kui, thus completely shattering the enemy’s AM plan.
