The film vividly and realistically depicts the defense battle of the Soviet Army on the Don Steppe in the summer of 1942: a team, while retreating, is ordered to seize the heights at a crossroads behind a small village. The protagonists come from different professions before the war, and the war brings them together. After a grueling battle, the team accomplishes the task of taking the heights and preserves their flag, but at a heavy cost, with severe casualties.
