"Knock Down the House" tells the story of four remarkable women who, during the 2018 midterm elections, broke the balance of power by moving from local elections to challenging powerful incumbents, showcasing an inspiring and uplifting scene. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, born in the Bronx, faced misfortune as her family suffered during the financial crisis, forcing her to work two bartending shifts to prevent losing her home to foreclosure. Amy Vilela lost a loved one to a preventable illness and was filled with anger towards America's fractured healthcare system, unsure of what to do. Cori Bush, a registered nurse and pastor, took to the streets when police shot and killed an unarmed Black man, as protesters poured in and tanks rolled into her community. Paula Jean Swearengin, the daughter of a coal miner, was fed up watching her friends and family suffer from the environmental impacts of coal mining. "Knock Down the House" won the Audience Award and the Audience Favorite Award in the U.S. Documentary section at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, telling the story of four extraordinary women who entered the race during a historic time of political turmoil in the United States. They mobilized supporters, attracted voters, and initiated a movement.
