This drama tells the legendary and tumultuous life of China's last emperor, Puyi Aisin Gioro. From emperor to leader, from war criminal to new citizen, he experienced the last glory of the Forbidden City, moved north from Tianjin to become the "Emperor of Manchukuo," was captured during Japan's defeat and held in the Soviet Union for five years, and upon being extradited back home as a war criminal, received a special pardon. The brightest and most hopeful days of his life came as he participated in work and elections as an ordinary citizen, ultimately basking in the dawn of a new era, but passed away with a lingering attachment to his new life. The Qing Dynasty experienced nearly three centuries of rise and fall, being the last dynasty of the feudal era; among more than five hundred prominent emperors, he was the final one, powerless amidst the swirling political struggles, struggling in the helplessness of wanting to restore the Qing yet becoming a puppet. His fate is intertwined with the transition from the feudal dynasty to the rise of the new China, serving as a microcosm of the changes between two generations of governance in China.
