In 1585, Elizabeth I (played by Cate Blanchett) is 52 years old. She remains unmarried, her political acumen is well developed, and she handles state affairs with greater ease than in her youth. Open-minded, she allows people to practice Roman Catholicism. However, she repeatedly faces opposition from Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots, who even sends assassins to attempt to murder Elizabeth. On the other hand, the Queen also confronts her arch-enemy, Spain. The religious differences between Spain and England, coupled with rampant piracy, sharpen the conflicts between the two nations and lay the groundwork for future war. Sir Walter Raleigh, bearing fresh experiences from overseas adventures, appears before the Queen, stirring feelings long dormant in her heart. However, her love must ultimately yield to the nation's interests. During the war between England and Spain, the mighty resolve shown by the Queen pushes Great Britain to the pinnacle of dominance.
