In early 20th century Shanghai, classmates who returned from studying in France, Ren Tianxiang (Chen Xunqi) and He Feifan (Liu Ximing), meet progressive journalist Zhong Xueran (Lu Mingshu). Zhong invites them to join him, but unexpectedly, a killer suddenly murders Zhong Xueran, and Ren and He are arrested and imprisoned as suspects.
