The film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Ken Bruen, with the screenplay personally adapted by William Monahan. Mitchell (Colin Farrell) was once a street thug. After spending a few years in prison, he decides to turn his life around but struggles to find work. His former friends offer him a job collecting money for a high-interest loan shark, which he reluctantly accepts. Soon after, he is hired by a reclusive actress named Beatrice (Keira Knightley) who is overwhelmed by paparazzi and tabloid reporters. Beatrice hires Mitchell to help "clear her troubles." As Beatrice gradually learns about Mitchell's character, they fall in love. Just as Mitchell begins to dream of a future, his past catches up with him. The illegal activities from his street days continue to haunt him. Unfortunately, Mitchell finds himself inexplicably wrapped up in conflicts with gangsters, threats that endanger his new life. Can he navigate these troubles and live happily with Beatrice?
