Bass player Christopher (Henry Fonda) and his wife Rose (Vera Miles) live a quiet life. Although they are not financially secure, their happy marriage and lovely children make Christopher feel there are no regrets in life. Rose needs money for dental treatment, and cash-strapped Christopher decides to take out a loan. However, when he arrives at the bank with the paperwork, fate plays a cruel joke on him. Christopher, who is completely unaware, is arrested by the police for robbing the bank. As the investigation deepens, more accusations against him surface. Despite being oblivious to these charges, Christopher is left speechless when faced with undeniable evidence and witnesses. After being released on bail, Christopher and Rose hire a lawyer to investigate the entire incident, but all the evidence they uncover is detrimental to Christopher. Just as the couple begins to lose hope, a turning point in their situation arises.
