Set in London, England, in 1977, the story follows a woman named Miss Shepherd (played by Maggie Smith) who drives her grandfather's van into a middle-class neighborhood. Miss Shepherd has no home, living in her van for all her needs. In other words, she appears to others as a dirty, smelly homeless person. The middle-class residents of this community tolerate Miss Shepherd's presence due to their excellent upbringing; however, their kindness and tolerance do not earn them any goodwill from her. This stubborn and cantankerous old lady makes life difficult for the people living there. Over time, no one pays any attention to Miss Shepherd, except for a seemingly simple playwright named Alan (played by Alex Jennings), who greets her with a smile every day and even agrees to let her park in his driveway.
