In the early Republic of China, the small town of Qingshi Street in Jiangnan was suddenly struck by a fierce storm, and the stone tablet “The Nation’s Eternal Harmony,” which blessed the town with peace and tranquility, was shattered by lightning. According to family rules, a new tablet must be inscribed by a pair of golden boys born on the same day of the same month of the same year, and it should be set up at the bridgehead on an auspicious day when one of them gets married.
The people of Qingshi Street finally welcomed the golden boys He Ziyuan and Zhou Yunting. Both were naturally intelligent and were admitted to the Higher Normal School with excellent scores, one in humanities and the other in mathematics. Just before starting school, He Ziyuan met Luo Yilian from the neighboring village and fell in love at first sight.
At school, Zhou Yunting fell for the new woman Ouyang Doukou. However, Doukou had feelings for He Ziyuan. He Ziyuan was expelled from school after being secretly plotted against by Hu Zhonghan, the son of the police chief, while trying to protect Doukou.
Returning to Qingshi Street, He Ziyuan, still thinking of Luo Yilian, rejected all marriage proposals. Luo Yilian, however, was forced by her parents to marry into the Zhou family. Zhou Yunting was adamantly against the arranged marriage and jumped out the window to escape without lifting Luo Yilian's red veil. Angered, Zhou’s father cut off funding for Zhou Yunting's education.
Zhou Yunting's concubine Xiang Cui had an ambiguous relationship with Zhou Ji, and they both sought to seize the Zhou family’s property. When Zhou's father discovered this, he fell seriously ill and asked He Ziyuan to bring Zhou Yunting home. Xiang Cui and Zhou Ji killed Zhou’s father and framed Luo Yilian. After returning home, Zhou Yunting vented his anger towards Luo Yilian and wanted a divorce. However, the clan leader intervened, leading to a resurgence of hope for He Ziyuan and Luo Yilian, which once again plunged them into suffering. The small Qingshi Street could not satisfy Zhou Yunting's ideals, so he entrusted his family business to He Ziyuan to pursue his ambitions.
He Ziyuan and Luo Yilian met every day but could not love one another, enduring great torment. After graduation, Doukou came to Qingshi Street to be a primary school teacher. He’s mother greatly adored Doukou.
Zhou Yunting eventually made his way to Beijing, experiencing trials of life and death, and finally sought refuge under the Feng army but was mistaken by General Zhang as someone who disrupted military morale, nearly being killed, before escaping back to Qingshi Street.
Doukou's father promised his daughter to Hu Zhonghan for his own career. He Ziyuan comforted Doukou, but Zhou Yunting witnessed this, causing misunderstandings between him and Luo Yilian. He Ziyuan told Zhou Yunting that the woman in his heart was Luo Yilian, and Zhou Yunting realized the truth and proposed a divorce to Luo Yilian again...
The cunning Hu Zhonghan helped Zhou Yunting secure a position as a county magistrate in Macheng, secretly plotting to kill him. Doukou helped Zhou Yunting eliminate the treachery and fled from danger, gradually accepting his feelings.
The misunderstandings between He Ziyuan and Luo Yilian were resolved, and they headed to Macheng to seek a divorce from Zhou Yunting. Their relationship caused a huge uproar in Qingshi Street, leading to a clan rule demanding they be drowned, but Doukou fought desperately to save them. On her deathbed, He’s mother presented Doukou with a family heirloom bracelet in front of Luo Yilian, asking her to marry He Ziyuan. Heartbroken, Luo Yilian left home.
Zhou Yunting, who went to Japan for studies, was forced to join the army and returned to Qingshi Street as a translator, where He Ziyuan and Doukou glared at him with anger but later accepted him after discovering the truth.
Accused of transmitting messages to the guerrillas, Doukou was captured by the Japanese army and was to be executed. At the execution ground, Zhou Yunting and Doukou held their wedding, and their blood stained the Qingshi River red. The townsfolk of Qingshi Street were enraged, awakened, and began to resist...
Looking at the newly erected “The Nation’s Eternal Harmony” at the bridgehead, He Ziyuan shouldered his bag and left Qingshi Street...
