Plain-looking Carla (Emmanuelle Devos) is shy and introverted, and she wears a hearing aid due to her poor hearing. Carla works as a secretary at a construction company, and the heavy workload leaves her feeling overwhelmed. At her boss's suggestion, she decides to find an assistant for herself. Paul (Vincent Cassel) is released from prison after serving two years and, through an agency, becomes Carla's assistant. As they interact, Carla teaches him work skills, and upon discovering that Paul is homeless, she helps him find a place to live. Paul mistakenly believes that Carla is doing all this to make him repay her with his body... Carla breaks free from Paul's embrace and runs out of the house. Later, Carla encounters conflicts with her boss at work and asks Paul to steal company documents for revenge. Just as their relationship begins to shift in subtle ways, Paul's enemy, Maxon, finds him and demands repayment of a debt. With no money, Paul has to work at Maxon's bar, drawing Carla into a thrilling crime situation...
