High school student Sutter (Miles Teller) is aimless, loves to party, and enjoys drinking, making him a joke among his classmates. After his girlfriend Cassidy breaks up with him to be with the student council president, he drinks heavily and wakes up on Aimee's lawn the next morning. Aimee (Shailene Woodley), unlike Sutter, is a serious student living with her mother and stepfather, who loves sci-fi novels and has never had a boyfriend. Surprisingly, the two find a unique connection. Sutter asks Aimee for help with math, and she happily agrees. Their relationship quickly heats up as they share their youth together. However, with graduation approaching, Aimee is set to move to Philadelphia for school, and both young people face their own family issues. How will they navigate their future?
