In Datong folklore, there exists a beautiful legend. The story takes place during the Zhengde period of the Ming Dynasty, when the young Zhengde Emperor ascended to the throne. Due to his playful nature, the powerful eunuch Liu Jin took control, colluding with the Hu people, and scheming to usurp power. The Empress Dowager and a group of ministers were deeply worried about the fate of the nation.
The Zhengde Emperor, under the pretense of admiring Datong's local customs, secretly arrived there in disguise with his attendant, Xiao Chong'er, to investigate the evidence of Liu Jin's collusion. Unexpectedly, while dining at Feng Lin Ge, Zhengde accidentally got involved in a murder case and met the proprietress, Sister Feng.
This murder case was actually instigated by the local thug, Cao Hu, who aimed to frame Sister Feng and steal the business of Feng Lin Ge. With the support of his uncle, who was the military governor of Datong, Cao Hu colluded with the local authorities to arrest Zhengde Emperor and others. However, Sister Feng mistakenly thought that the disguised Zhengde Emperor was here to frame her. When Cao, realizing he mistakenly captured the Zhengde Emperor, panicked and decided with the local magistrate to cover up the Emperor's true identity, he quietly judged the case, arresting Cao Hu and releasing the Zhengde Emperor.
After the false alarm, Sister Feng felt uneasy about misunderstanding the young man. The young man, who was attracted to the vibrant and beautiful Sister Feng, invited her to be his guide to explore famous sights like the Yungang Grottoes. Sister Feng gladly accompanied him. The Zhengde Emperor discovered that Sister Feng, though a common woman, was knowledgeable about historical sites and landmarks, which astonished him.
Meanwhile, Liu Jin in the capital suspected that the Zhengde Emperor had ulterior motives for going to Datong. However, upon receiving a secret report about Zhengde’s true intention of leisure pursuit and his affection for a common woman, he was delighted. Liu Jin instructed his spy, Xiao Chong'er, to find an opportunity to poison and eliminate the Zhengde Emperor. At the same time, to keep an eye on the loyal minister Li Dongyang, he reluctantly gifted his favored concubine Liu Laner to him.
Xiao Chong'er poisoned the Zhengde Emperor’s teacup, but when the Emperor was about to drink, Xiao Chong'er couldn't bear to let him drink the poisoned tea and knocked it over. Liu Jin, upon learning that Xiao Chong'er failed to follow instructions, sneered and told his henchmen that he had another plan to put the Zhengde Emperor to death! It turned out that Liu Jin had already colluded with the Hu people to ambush the Zhengde Emperor near Yungang, but they were defeated by Cao Hu's forces.
In the capital, Li Dongyang sent spies to inform the Zhengde Emperor of the turmoil in the court and Liu Jin's intentions, urging him to return to the capital quickly! The Zhengde Emperor reluctantly parted with Sister Feng, while Cao Hu stationed thirty thousand troops outside the capital under the pretext of safeguarding the Emperor to intimidate Liu Jin. Seeing this, Liu Jin staged a play of sacrificing himself to protect the Emperor and pretending to be a loyal minister. The Zhengde Emperor feigned ignorance and began to rely heavily on Liu Jin, causing unease among the court ministers. The Zhengde Emperor conspired with Li Dongyang to go to Datong again to expose Liu Jin's treasonous intentions and obtain evidence to remove the treacherous minister.
Meanwhile, Sister Feng at Feng Lin Ge missed the young man (Zhengde Emperor) day and night but was entangled by the escaped Cao Hu. Cao Hu schemed to drug Sister Feng’s tea with a love potion. Just as Cao Hu was about to take advantage of her, the Zhengde Emperor arrived, causing Cao Hu to flee, leading to a misunderstanding with Sister Feng...
Cao Hu then devised a poison plot to frame the young man (Zhengde Emperor). Just when the Zhengde Emperor was being escorted to the woods, facing a life-threatening crisis, Cao Hu's forces arrived just in time to save the Emperor. By this time, everyone knew the Zhengde Emperor's identity, except for Sister Feng, who remained in the dark.
Liu Jin thought the time to usurp power had come and hastily prepared the dragon robes and jade seal for his ascension. Li Dongyang also considered the conditions ripe for removing Liu Jin's faction, asking the Empress Dowager to feign a severe illness to summon the Emperor back to the capital.
At this moment, the Zhengde Emperor, now reconciled with the Hu prince, had alleviated border concerns. Sister Feng and the young man’s (Zhengde Emperor) feelings grew stronger, and they finally united. As news arrived from the capital, the Zhengde Emperor became anxious, but Sister Feng, perceiving flaws in the situation, advised the Emperor to return secretly to the capital to eliminate Liu Jin's inner trouble!
The Zhengde Emperor returned to the capital quietly, secretly commanding Li Dongyang and other loyal subjects to gather evidence against Liu Jin. Upon learning that Sister Feng was pregnant, Liu Jin wanted to exploit her for his schemes. However, Sister Feng discovered Liu Jin's plot and, in pain, terminated her pregnancy, which thwarted Liu Jin's schemes.
Li Dongyang devised a strategy, using the discovery of a treasure site from the Yuan Dynasty near Datong as bait to lure Liu Jin out of the capital. While Liu Jin was preoccupied with hunting for treasure, Li Dongyang had already eliminated Liu Jin’s influence in the capital. Liu Jin received urgent news and began to march back to the capital, but it was too late. On the way back, the Zhengde Emperor commanded the Imperial Forest Army to intercept Liu Jin, leading to a fierce battle. Using the tactics Liu Jin had taught him, the Zhengde Emperor turned the tables and eliminated Liu Jin.
The Zhengde Emperor wanted to take Sister Feng back to the palace. However, Sister Feng firmly refused, stating that she was a common woman and could not interfere with the Emperor's governance. The Zhengde Emperor attempted to forcefully take Sister Feng away, sealing Feng Lin Ge. Sister Feng would rather become a nun than go to the capital. The Zhengde Emperor even set the nunnery on fire to force Sister Feng out, but she remained steadfast, willing to die rather than leave. The Zhengde Emperor regretted this and rushed to extinguish the fire, but it was too late.
Heartbroken over Sister Feng, the Zhengde Emperor decreed that Feng Lin Ge should never open again unless Sister Feng were to come back to life! The Empress Dowager also strongly opposed this matter, forcing the Zhengde Emperor to choose between the beautiful woman and the realm. Now that Sister Feng was dead, it neatly cut off the Zhengde Emperor's longing. He had no choice but to heed the Empress Dowager’s command and agree to marry a Hu princess, return to the capital, and restore the Ming Dynasty. Sister Feng's warnings and encouragement finally made the Zhengde Emperor recognize his mission, resolving to be a good emperor dedicated to the country and the people, abandoning his playful ways and focusing solely on state affairs...
