Mark (played by Karlheinz Böhm) is a photographer who is passionate about his craft, always carrying a handheld camera that was left to him by his father. A series of murders in the city causes panic, with the victims all being women whose faces are filled with extreme fear at the time of their deaths, and the dapper Mark is the true perpetrator of these horrifying crimes. It turns out that Mark's father was a psychologist researching children's fears, and as his experiment subject, Mark was surrounded by various sudden frights from a young age. This prolonged fear and repression led to his distorted personality, becoming the fuse for all the tragedies. By chance, Mark is captivated by the beauty of his neighbor Helen (played by Anna Massey), and just as he is about to act on his impulses, he hesitates. Helen's innocent and beautiful nature temporarily heals Mark's childhood trauma, but the madness that often ravages him plunges him into a self-conflict with his nature. Mark, who continues to commit crimes, attracts the attention of the police, and at the moment of his arrest, a desperate Mark chooses self-destruction.
