On the fifteenth of July, the gates of hell swing wide open, and lonely spirits roam the earth. Master Maoshan Daoist Nine Uncle (played by Lam Ching-Ying) meticulously prepares offerings needed for the Ghost Month, while his mischievous second disciple, Wen Cai, sneaks off to watch a ghost play. Naive and unaware, Wen Cai not only finds himself surrounded by a crowd of ghosts but also catches the eye of the stunning female ghost, Xiao Li (played by Wu Ga-Lai). Master Nine orders his senior disciple, Qiu Sheng (played by Chien Cheung), to rescue him, but Qiu Sheng is captivated by Xiao Li’s beauty. Ultimately, the master and disciples stir the crowd of ghosts, causing them to escape the control of the ghost officers and wander the human world. To prevent the spirits from harming people, Nine Uncle gathers his fellow brothers to discuss strategies.
