Sister Sharon (played by Jean Simmons) is on her journey of evangelism when she meets a man named Elmer (played by Burt Lancaster). Elmer is a shrewd and cunning opportunist who sees a chance to profit from Sister Sharon. Under the pretext of building a church by the seaside, Elmer persuades Sharon to make money with him, and soon, the naive and innocent Sharon finds herself uncontrollably in love with Elmer, even offering her body to him, which was meant for God. However, it isn't long before Elmer grows tired of Sharon and callously abandons her. Lulu (played by Shirley Jones), the daughter of a minister, feels deep sympathy and anger upon learning of Sharon's tragic fate. To take revenge on Elmer, Lulu devises a series of schemes that ultimately lead to Elmer's downfall.
