65-year-old Prague literature teacher Tokrlen (played by Zdenek Sverák) seems somewhat out of touch with the times. The rebellion of his students becomes intolerable, leading him to lose his job when he tries to impose a minor punishment. Unemployed, Tokrlen takes a job as a courier, perhaps to escape the oppressive atmosphere at home, but soon faces a car accident that takes him out of the job. His married daughter is going through emotional setbacks, and while collecting bottles at a supermarket, Tokrlen also cares for his grandchild. His two colleagues, a retired army officer and a part-time young man, express their emotional struggles in different ways, and Tokrlen connects them. He is also well-liked among customers. Tokrlen often fantasizes about dating various women; his wife senses their growing emotional distance but feels helpless. One day, the daughter and her new boyfriend take the two elderly men on an outing, and their hot air balloon suddenly loses control... This film won the Best Director award at the 2008 Czech Lion Awards, along with several other accolades.
