In 1942, upon learning that his parents and childhood betrothed, Kikyō, had been captured by the traitor Liu Laopao, who had defected to the Japanese army, Shi Guangrong, a company commander of an independent regiment, captured Liu Laopao. Commander Shen of the Kuomintang's 24th Regiment, who had once been saved by Liu Laopao, intervened on the grounds of KMT-CCP cooperation, facilitating Liu Laopao's release of Kikyō and others, and secretly let Liu Laopao escape. This led Shi Guangrong to no longer trust Commander Shen. Kikyō joined the army as a nurse to be by Shi Guangrong’s side. However, Shi Guangrong only saw Kikyō as a sister and fell in love with a nurse from the health team, Wang Bailing. Liu Laopao burned Shi Guangrong’s parents to death, fueling Shi Guangrong’s and Kikyō's vow to capture Liu Laopao. Following Japan's surrender, Liu Laopao defected to Commander Shen's troops. The civil war broke out, and Shi Guangrong was promoted to division commander as he fought fiercely for the control of Northeast China against Commander Shen. Commander Shen led his remnants to flee into the mountains and became a bandit with Liu Laopao. After the Huaihai Campaign commenced, Commander Shi Guangrong was ordered back to Northeast China to eliminate bandits, ultimately destroying the remnants of Commander Shen and Liu Laopao, while Wang Bailing sacrificed herself in Shi Guangrong’s arms to save him. In a song-and-dance troupe entering the city, Shi Guangrong discovered a woman named Chu Qin who resembled Wang Bailing, and he rode his horse to Chu Qin’s house.
