The story takes place in South Africa in 1968, where the harsh and severe apartheid system condemns the lives of twenty-five million black people to a tragic fate. In order to maintain their racial rights, some black individuals rise up in rebellion, but the outcome awaiting them is either deportation or imprisonment on Robben Island. James (played by Joseph Fiennes) is born into such a harsh environment; fortunately, he is a bona fide white man. From a young age, adults instill in James the absurd concept that "blacks are inferior." As an adult, having been completely brainwashed, James becomes a guard at Robben Island prison, where he oversees the political prisoner Mandela (played by Dennis Haysbert), a fighter for South African democracy. As time goes by, James, who begins to understand more about black people, starts to question his actions—can white people really imprison and insult their fellow countrymen so arbitrarily?
