Qiangba (played by Wangdui) was born into the serf society of Tibet, where people wore neck shackles. His father was beaten to death for defying the serf owner. His mother (portrayed by Qiangba) could not repay the debts owed to the king of hell for generations and was ultimately tortured to death by Resawangjie (played by Qiongdai). His grandmother (played by Shique Zhuoma) worked hard to raise Qiangba until he was over ten years old. One day, starving, Qiangba was punished by the Tüteng Living Buddha (played by Tsiren Dorji) to become mute after eating an offering in the temple.
