In 18th century Louisiana, Louis (played by Brad Pitt), a grieving plantation owner who has lost his wife and daughter, encounters the vampire Lestat (played by Tom Cruise), who transforms him into a vampire through magic. Louis, holding onto his humanity, refuses to kill humans for blood and survives by drinking animal blood, while Lestat is determined to teach Louis to become a true vampire. In New Orleans, Louis succumbs to temptation and drinks the blood of a young girl, Claudia (played by Kirsten Dunst), and Lestat, disregarding Louis's objections, turns Claudia into a vampire as well. The three form a peculiar family. Decades pass, and Claudia begins to resent Lestat for robbing her of her true life. She devises a plan to kill Lestat, and she and Louis travel the world together, living as both father and daughter and lovers, searching for others like them and for the meaning of their own existence. In Paris, they encounter a group of vampires led by Armand (played by Antonio Banderas), who live underground in a theater and lead a life completely different from theirs. Armand provides Louis with much guidance and wishes to become Louis's new companion, leading to a rift between Louis and Claudia, ultimately resulting in an irreversible tragedy. In 1988, Louis returns to New Orleans and recounts his experiences to a young reporter, Malloy (played by Christian Slater), sharing the sorrow behind the vampire's immortality. However, after hearing his tale, Malloy becomes deeply intrigued, and a new vampire story begins.
