In 1979, the United States, trapped in the Vietnam War and the Cold War, did not experience a rebirth during the era of technological advancement but instead slid into a crisis of confidence, shaking the "American spirit." Herb Brooks (played by Kurt Russell) was the celebrated coach who led the University of Minnesota hockey team to three consecutive championships. Six months before the Winter Olympics began, Herb was tasked with assembling and training a new U.S. hockey team. At that time, the Soviet hockey team held absolute dominance internationally, winning Olympic gold medals consecutively since the 1960s. From the outset of forming his team, Herb viewed the Soviets as the ultimate opponent. He brought together outstanding hockey players from various colleges to form a 26-man preliminary team, and through rigorous training, these non-professional players formed a truly combat-ready group. Three days before the Olympic opening, the U.S. and Soviet hockey teams played a warm-up match. Although the U.S. team lost, Herb and his players understood that the real competition lay ahead at the Olympics… This film is based on the true story of the 1980 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.
