Eddie (played by Melissa Leo) is a single mother whose husband, burdened with huge gambling debts, disappeared with all of their savings, leaving her to care for their two young children. Faced with this predicament, Eddie can only grit her teeth and bear it silently. To ensure her children's healthy and smooth growth, she is forced to get involved in local illegal activities. Despite the crime and danger, Eddie finds it hard to refuse the high rewards. One day, a woman named Lila (played by Misty Upham), who shares a similar situation, approaches Eddie and begs her to let her join in. Unable to resist Lila's persistence, Eddie agrees. Thus, the two frail women set off on their journey, tasked with crossing the frozen St. Lawrence River. Besides the police, the harsh natural environment poses another significant threat.
